Madman Studio is a furniture design and fabrication practice founded by Maddi Johnson in 2026. Built at the intersection of architecture, sculpture, and craftsmanship, the studio creates limited-edition collections that transform ordinary architectural materials into enduring furniture objects.

The studio was established after years of developing what would become its inaugural collection. Rather than rushing pieces to market, the work evolved through continuous prototyping, fabrication, and everyday use. Living with the furniture revealed opportunities to refine proportions, construction methods, and material expression. That iterative process remains fundamental to every collection produced by the studio.

Working primarily with dimensional construction lumber, Madman Studio reimagines familiar architectural materials through expressive geometry, exposed end grain, traditional charring techniques, and mechanically assembled construction. Each piece seeks to elevate the ordinary without concealing its origins, celebrating the beauty of structure, process, and honest material.

About the Founder

Maddi Johnson is an architectural designer, furniture designer, and maker whose work explores the relationship between architecture and furniture. Educated in architecture at the University of Pittsburgh and Carnegie Mellon University, her professional experience spans master planning, commercial, civic, educational, healthcare, residential, interior architecture, and design-build projects.

Throughout that work, furniture remained a parallel pursuit. The discipline offered an opportunity to explore architecture at the scale of the human body, where structure, material, and function converge in a single object. Additional study in furniture design at Carnegie Mellon University and in Copenhagen further shaped an approach rooted in experimentation, craftsmanship, and material honesty.

Today, Maddi leads Madman Studio full time, continuing to develop an evolving design language through limited-edition collections. Each body of work builds upon the last, expanding the studio's exploration of material, construction, and form while remaining grounded in the belief that thoughtful design can transform the familiar into something unexpected.
